Dr. M.I. ElLaissi
December 26, 1921 - November 15, 2008
Dr. M.I. ElLaissi, 86, entered eternal peace on the morning of November 15, 2008 at his beloved residence on Tybee Island, GA after a determined and brave fight against cancer.
Dr. ElLaissi lived an amazing life. A native of Cairo, Egypt he continued his graduate work in London, England before coming to the United States in 1957 as a Fulbright scholar. He received his Ph.D from the University of Texas in Austin, TX. It was in Texas that he met his beloved wife of 48 years, Dr. Bobbie Ruth ElLaissi. After receiving his doctorate, he and his wife returned to Egypt where they taught at Ain Shams University in Cairo. He returned with his family to the United States in 1968 to teach at Georgia Southern University. He was a respected professor for his dedicated service to his students and to his profession, always striving to challenge himself and his students until his retirement in 1990.
His family fondly remembers him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Retirement brought the Drs. ElLaissi to Tybee Island, GA where he spent many, many days enjoying the sea. He also enjoyed reading, music, and was an excellent writer. His love of learning and his passion for the arts continued throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Bobbie Ruth ElLaissi of Tybee Island, GA., a son Fathy ElLaissi of Evans, GA., daughters Ruthie Foss of Brooklet, GA., and Melanie ElLaissi of Oakland, CA. , his four grandchildren, Dr. Jay Hendley of Dalton, GA., Jamie Foss of Charleston, S.C., William ElLaissi of Atlanta, Ga., and Sarah Jane ElLaissi of Evans, GA. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
A private memorial service will be held by the family. Memorials may be made in memory of Dr. ElLaissi to the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, 1732 Wisconsin Avenue N.W. Washington, D.C. 20007
